what have we done so far?
In 2022 we introduced a new monomaterial wrapper for the first time, which is designed for recyclability and sourced with recycled plastic (using a mass balance approach).
so, why is this better?
The monomaterial design of the wrapper means it can be recycled via store drop-off in the UK, and is eligible for curbside recycling in the Republic of Ireland.
What’s more, by sourcing recycled plastic our new wrappers contain 30% less virgin plastic on a mass balance basis than our old wrapper.
how's it possible to use recycled content in our wrappers?
The recycled content in our wrappers is made through a process called “advanced recycling”.
It’s pretty complicated, but in short, advanced recycling breaks plastics which have been recycled down into their original oils, so that they can be remade into new plastic packaging materials without using more virgin plastic.
what's a mass balance approach?
KIND® sources recycled plastic using a "mass balance" methodology, whereby recycled plastic is purchased at an agreed-upon volume and mixed with virgin or new plastic during the manufacturing process.
This means that although the recycled content per bar wrapper may vary, overall we’re contributing to circularity through the use of recycled plastic.
why can't i recycle your wrappers at home in the uk?
While our wrappers are recyclable at curbside in Republic of Ireland, in the UK they need to be taken back to a supermarket with drop-off recycling facilities to be recycled.
This is because the recycling infrastructure in the UK doesn’t yet have the capability to recycle small flexible plastics. But hopefully this changes soon!

We are in the process of rolling out our new wrappers on all of our core and protein bars in the UK & Ireland.
