In 2022, Jo Newby was selected as the UK's kind hero following an extensive nationwide search. She received the accolade due to her opening her home time and time again, fostering an astounding 92 children to date. In addition to this, she has helped hundreds of members of the community during the past two decades and helped better the lives of local pan-disabled children in need. To support and help the disadvantaged, she then became the co-founder of Barton Inclusive Football Club Hull (BIFC Hull), consisting of three competitive pan-disability football teams for children and young adults in the area. She did this as there were no competitive teams in her region that catered for this need in her community.
Tom Saunders lost his son to cancer when he was just 18 years old. Before his son, Ben, passed away, he was given an experience away to Centre Parks through a charity. Having enjoyed this so much, he set up his own charity, the Ben Saunders Foundation, to provide a similar experience to others suffering in the same way as he did. He even designed the logo, which is still used today. Despite his grief, Tom Saunders has continued Ben's legacy by raising thousands of pounds and offering fully paid breaks away to young cancer sufferers and their families. The foundation has supported 270 families since they opened in April 2021. These are families with someone under 24 with cancer as well as bereaved parents. Tom was the winner of the Sheffield Mutual 2023 Charity Award and was a finalist for the 2021 Pride of Britain Awards.
Lorraine and Lee Lewis established the Lewis Foundation in 2016. Their charity helps adults who are undergoing cancer treatment in hospitals. The story began when Lee's mother was receiving her own treatment. Lee and Lorraine noticed that many patients arrived at the hospital without basic items like toiletries. Additionally, once on the ward, there wasn't much to keep them occupied. That's why, for the past seven years, The Lewis Foundation has been working to provide a special gift to each cancer patient who arrives at one of the hospitals they support. This gift is meant to brighten their day and help take their mind off the challenges they are facing. What began as a partnership with just one hospital has now expanded to include 17 hospitals throughout the Midlands. The Lewis Foundation is making a remarkable impact.
Joe is the founder of the Wave Project, a program dedicated to enhancing the mental health and overall well-being of young people. He initiated this charity in 2010 after realising the therapeutic potential of the ocean. The Wave Project now aids young individuals in need of support through NHS-recognised therapies that offer a non-traditional therapeutic experience. To date, the Wave Project has positively impacted around 8,000 young people and continues to do so.
Rick, a double amputee who lost both his legs while serving in the Armed Forces, tirelessly commits his time to supporting military veterans and service families. Rick has created a community of individuals who share similar experiences, offering essential assistance to help the community overcome various challenges and arranging a wealth of community events. Every year, Rick takes part in a 10-mile trek to showcase his unwavering support for veterans and to raise awareness of Armed Forces Day. Rick’s positive impact on his community inspires so many.
